The way things are going ecologically and environmentally, many more "things" might disappear sooner than we think.  If you have time, try and see at least some of the 500 places offered in this book.  Thankfully though, not all is doom and gloom, as many sites are on the road to recovery thanks to the efforts by those who want to make a difference.  Right off the bat however, I was horrified to read that in the Everglades in Florida, "The number of bird species has fallen by 93%,..." and that 50% of the land has been lost to urban development and agriculture.  Statistics such as those are not restricted to the USA; it's happening all around the world, both as a result of natural and/or man-made disasters.  Seeing is believing, and many places are well worth trekking to.  From the Grand Canyon to the Dead Sea, the Amazon Rainforest to the frozen continent of Antarctica, Hawaii's volcanoes to the Aysen Wilderness in Chile, Cape Cod to the Kenaifjords in Alaska, or Mosquito Bay in Puerto Rico to Sherwood Forest in England.  Also worth considering are mountain sites, forests, rivers, seas, lakes, national parks around the world, animal sanctuaries, islands, caves, cities, and ruins which are all over the planet.  Accommodation and information contacts are supplied.  Many b/w illustrations.  Happily, although a long way to go still, I've seen 35 sites already.  My solution to halt the disapperance of many places: Humans have to stop breeding indiscriminately.
Conclusion - Well worth reading way before planning what to see and where to go.
