We all know the story of Scott Peterson and about the deaths of his wife Laci and their unborn son Conner. The media jumped all over it and everywhere you looked, there was something about the case. Amber Frey was going about her life when she met Peterson on a blind date and fell instantly for his charm and good looks. Little did she know that she was being lied to right from the start as he told her about bogus trips he was to make and the phony calls he supposedly made from Paris and other locations. They were in touch by telephone when not with each other and Amber felt as though he could be "the one". She was a single mom and lonely. Having protective friends who looked out for her gave her strength to face what was about to unfold. The unimaginable. One of her friends thought Peterson might not be who he said he was and once Amber realized his lies and that he did in fact have a wife (he eventually told her in early December that he'd "lost" his wife but wouldn't elaborate), she contacted the Modesto, California police and started cooperating with them. She felt she owed it to Laci to do all she could to help find her. I couldn't imagine being in Amber's situation and have to commend her for her bravery in coming forward and letting go of a killer. One just never knows what's around the corner. Nor can we fully trust people - not all people. Strangely, I read this book on February 10th, Amber's birthday.
