It shouldn't take a bout of breast cancer for one to realize the importance of eating well.  Sadly however, it's usually something traumatic that's needed to change one's life.  This happened to Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow.  And now that she's a mother of two little boys, Crow's ideas about eating well for health reasons are more apparent.  Kids and breast cancer.  That'll do it.  Ms. Crow enlisted the help of chef Chuck White and learned all she could about not only eating healthily, but also about preparing healthy foods.  We're invited into the Crow household, and her book is peppered with personal stories and photos.  Part of the equation of eating well is eating foods in season.  The other part is knowing how to prepare the food.  Sheryl and Chuck cover Spring and Summer (on the road) and Fall and Winter (in the studio) and include Appetizers and Snacks; Soups; Salads; Main Courses; Side Dishes, and Desserts for both sections.  Some of their recipes that appealed to me are: Zucchini Muffins (not made with whole-wheat flower?); Bulgur Wheat Salad; Southern-Cobb Salad (looks fantastic); Sofrito Rice and Green Chiles and Mango; Warmed Hummus Soup with Cilantro Pesto and Garlicky Pita Chips: Five-Spiced Pork Tenderloin with Sautéed Fig and Plum Sauce (MMMMmmmmmmm), and Roasted Root Vegetables.  There are some very interesting dishes to try, and most ingredients seem readily available.  I love Sheryl's enthusiasm about her food and her new way of eating.  I love her farm too!
I always say we "need" food to survive, so why isn't healthy cooking being taught in schools?  It's no secret that if you eat well, you'll be well, for the most part.
Beautifully illustrated.  No nutritional guides.
Conclusion - Wonderfully tempting recipes to try with in-season foods.  You can be healthy and eat great food.
