On My Own at 107 - Reflections on Life Without Bessie
by Sarah L. Delany with Amy Hill Hearth
HarperSanFrancisco
ISBN 0-06-251486-5
Published February 1998 - Hardcover - 144 pages - $17.95

Imagine living to over 107 years old!  With your sister!  Meet the Delany sisters, Sarah and Bessie.  Pioneers during their lives, they attended university in the 1920s and Sarah became a teacher and Bessie became a dentist.  Neither married (so as not to "give up their careers") and thus spent their lives living together.  They were born in Raleigh, North Carolina, as were their eight siblings, before moving north to New York, and they outlived them all.  This book was written by Sarah, the older sister, to her beloved Bessie after her death in 1995 at the age of 104.  Of course she missed her terribly.  This is a charming diversion is this little book, to another time and place, where you hear firsthand about the history of two devoted sisters living the lives they wanted, through two World Wars and SO much more.  Bessie loved her garden and the flowers she kept profilic are remembered by Sarah, or Sadie as she was known, and there are gorgeous floral illustrations of her favorite blooms.
Conclusion - Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this little gem.  It'll brighten your day.
