I think it's safe to say that almost all of us would like to be in a little more control of our lives. It seems as though it should be getting easier, at least according to the zillions of books out there telling us so. "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff", Richard Carlson's runaway success book, is just one of those titles. Now, he has another, this one. This one has thirty-nine ways we can help ourselves lead a calmer, less stressful, and basically, a better life. In his introduction, Mr. Carlson says, "...this book is about far more than stress reduction. It will give you very practical, uncomplicated advice on matters that affect all aspects of your life, everything from improving your relationships with others and yourself to quieting your mind and simplifying your life, from practicing better communication skills to learning humility and discovering compassion, kindness, and the gifts of generosity". A tall order I'd say. Topics covered are our thoughts and how we can control them; the conscious (it's important to always be conscious) choices we make; hope; focus on the blessings; laughter, and saying "no", among others. With a little adjustment here and there in our chaotic lives, we can make changes that will change our outlook and the way we handle things. Doing something nice for others is an antidote for one's own self-involved life. Try it. A simple smile and a "What's the matter?" rhetoric I gave to a little girl who was crying, made her stop and listen, think about it, and smile right back. She couldn't wipe the smile off her face the next day either. It took all of about 10 seconds and I bet I felt even better than she did. Visit Mr. Carlson at www.easierthanyouthink.com.
