I love horses and I also love photography and art, so for me, this was a perfect combination. The imagery is not immediately obvious as many photos are blurry and atmospheric, but you know you're looking at a horse or horses. Art being the very subjective medium that it is, it's difficult to review it for the public. Personaly, I liked many photos but some I didn't get at all. How many people have said that about Picasso's work? So, artist/photographer/actor Viggo Mortensen shouldn't be worried as his work is infinitely interesting. Conveying the importance the horse plays in our lives, especially in the conditions Mr. Mortensen filmed (deserts), he's also captured horses working and not. He worked in color, black and white, long exposures or into bright sunlight, and in hot and cold climates. A bit of everything. As there isn't any text, you don't have a clue as to who, what, where, and why the photos are in the book. I would have loved to have been able to read about where the photos were taken or a story behind each shot. There is some kind of index to the photos listed at the beginning of the book, but it doesn't convey any facts to me.
Conclusion - An atmospheric look at horses. There are any number of photos I wouldn't mind hanging on my walls at home.
