Kate Remembered
by A. Scott Berg
G.P. Putnam's Sons
ISBN 0-399-15164-8
Published July 2003 - Hardcover - 370 pages

Author Berg met the legendary Katharine Hepburn in 1983 while doing a piece on her for Esquire Magazine (as part of a feature on fifty people in the last half-century who had made a difference), and while also researching for his biography on Samuel Goldwyn.  From then on, their friendship blossomed and he saw much more of her, ultimately becoming her biographer, and close friend, spending time at her New York home as well as time in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.  He relates the times he spent talking with Ms. Hepburn, she setting the record straight.  This book is as much about their time together as it is about Hepburn telling her story.  She mentions her beaux, her marriage, her early movies, her directors (notably George Cukor), and many of the influential people she met.  A staggeringly incredible life, yet so much time was spent away from it all, rather Garbo-esque.  Of course, the book wouldn't be worth that much if there wasn't a lucid lowdown about her great love, Spencer Tracy.  She goes into more detail than I anticipated and I felt her pain, although, by all accounts, I doubt Ms. Hepburn would have admitted to "pain".  She was one-of-a-kind and sadly, at the age of 96, she died in June 2003.  This is an easy to read book, and, the story we've been waiting for.  I thoroughly enjoyed this great book, which I found to be well-written, articulate, flowing, and hard to put down.
Conclusion - The perfect gift for any Katharine Hepburn admirer.
