Silent Partner - A Memoir of My Marriage
I can think of only a few things worse than finding out your husband is gay. The man you married and had a child with. The man who was a state governor. A very public man. I can't imagine the disappointment and hurt that must accompany such a disclosure. This is exactly what Dina Matos McGreevey went through when her husband, then Governor of New Jersey, dropped this bombshell. How does someone react? How does one feel? I don't care to know, but Dina bravely tells us in her book. She starts off telling us how they met and how long it took for them to actually hook up. He'd just gone through a divorce from his first wife (they had a daughter and she up and left him one day) and Dina was a little skeptical at first. She came to learn of her husband's dalliances with prostitutes as well as gay men, and his visits to strip clubs. Now, I always wonder how such public figures can possibly (I mean by any stretch of the imagination) expect not to be found out and exposed. It never ceases to amaze me that these people think they are really and truly above everyone else. History proves over and over again that they are not. Even though their lives seemed "normal", and to a certain extent Dina thought so too, it had to give under her husband's collection of lies and the things he hid from her. Not only did he destroy a marriage and family, he also compromised the country's security by appointing his lover in an extremely responsible and sensitive post. My heart goes out to her and her daughter and I admire the civil way in which she wrote this book. My God, it could not have been easy.
